Ode to Pizza

pizza

Oh glorious and gooey cheese

the more of thou there is, doth please

stretching higher and ever more near

until that snap, which causes fear.

Will that fear release as we embrace?

Oh, thick and sweet sauce robust

bursts of flavor upon my tongue

garlic, onion, olive oil, tomato

mix upon fresh ground oregano.

Thou slaps smeary bits upon my face.

Again fear, as a large bite I take

into the soft dough on which thee bake

the glutinous cause of bloating blight

as effluvium erupts out of sight.

I wonder if all is worth the cost.

Heat resounds around my mouth

causing the body to rend in drouth

grasping quickly for the cola near

as blisters upon the roof appear.

Ambrosial mix of flavors lost.

I temper thee – a salad shall prevent

in my belly that rock of cement

as thy flavors lovingly speak to me,

however harmful they be, upon my body.

No matter. I will try to eat thee with grace.
