Peony (A Horatian Ode)

Peony Collage

Dark speared leaves reach high and higher,

after they burst forth from the earth.

Observers… we watch… we wait.

Bud soars above the greens, a

soldier towering to keep watch.

Until the bulbous flower brims

with substance too heavy for the body.

It sways… it dips and bends…

eventually slumps back to earth, exhausted.

Oh flower… You colored the world…

for a moment.
